Barca’s Vermaelen Sidelined for Further Four- Months

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen has undergone
surgery to treat a right leg muscle injury, the Spanish
club announced on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old has not featured in a competitive
match for the Catalan giants since he signed from
Arsenal in a £14m deal in the summer. His only
appearance was in a friendly match for Barca’s
reserves in September.

The club said in a statement: “Thomas Vermaelen
successfully underwent surgery this Wednesday on the
semitendinosus muscle in his right hamstring. The
operation was performed in Finland by Dr Sakari Orava
and the recovery period is estimated at approximately
four months.”
Meaning he is not likely to make his long-awaited debut
until April.
Vermaelen featured for just 29 minutes at this year’s
World Cup before picking up an injury during Belgium
clash with Russia and, hence missed out of the ‘Red
Devils’s’ quarter-final loss to Argentina. He made 14
appearances for the ‘Gunners’ last season also owing
to injury.

Governor Fashola opens register for sex offenders in Lagos State

Kudos to Lagos State Governor, Raji Fashola who is the
first Nigerian governor to open a sex offenders register. He
signed an executive order to provide for compulsory
reporting of actual or suspected child abuse and
establishment of a sex offenders’ register at the State
House, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja, yesterday Dec. 1st.
He also identified Alimosho, Kosofe, Agege and Oshodi-
Isolo Local Govt as the councils with the highest cases of
Sexual and Gender Based Violence crimes in the state...
Below is what Fashola said
“I will like to tell those perpetrating the act in these
local governments (Alimosho, Kosofe, Agege and
Oshodi-Isolo) to desist now because we would be
coming after them. We will combat these crimes so
that they do not become big crimes in the state. Also,
in order to ensure that criminals are monitored, we
have created a crime data register which states
everyone who has engaged the criminal justice
system of the state, and we have close to a 100, 000
offenders on that register. And very soon, we would
start deploying people to the data rooms in the police
stations across the state to gather the bio data of
offenders including their photographs and others.
“This was why we have asked everyone to register so
that before you employ anyone, you will know his
track record. And this is the time for everyone
especially women to speak against it. This is the time
for us to have a local enforcement unit; either we call
it state police or whatever name we wish to call it, to
protect the women from frequent abuse from the
opposite gender. This is the time for women to rise up
and challenge employers who sets unimaginable
targets for their female employees. These were
targets they could not set for men,” he said
The Lagos State Attorney-General Mr Ade Ipaye added that
“We monitoring one hundred and thirteen 113 sexual
violence cases currently at the High Court. The Team
is working actively to ensure prompt prosecution of
these cases. The major aim of the Sex Offenders
Monitoring Programme and the Mandated Reporter
policy is to reduce repeat cases by providing names
and personal details of convicted sex offenders in the
State to a central database. The Database will be
accessible to individuals and organizations that need
information. For example, School proprietors who
want to recruit can access this Register as a form of
background check.
“The Mandated Reporter policy will make it
compulsory for all State School Administrators,
Counsellors, Teachers, Social Welfare Officers and
any other official of the State Government having any
dealings with children to report any suspected or
actual child abuse or neglect to the Attorney-General’s
office. It is envisaged that the Lagos State Sex
Offenders Register will be open and maintained by the
Lagos State Ministry of Justice in partnership with the
Lagos State Judiciary, the Nigerian Prisons and the
Nigerian Police”. He said.

resigned from the board of DAAR Communications Plc, to

directors meeting in Abuja. He said;

Prof Soyinka also berated the Inspector General of Police
for invading the National Assembly

inaugurating a season of brutish power. When a
people’s elected emissaries are disenfranchised, cast
out like vagrants and resort to scaling fences to
engage in their designated functions, the people get
the message”.
He applauded the lawmakers who scaled the National
Assembly fence on November 20th, saying it wasn't a show
of shame but rather the finest moments of the lawmakers.
In a swift reaction, the Special Assistant to President
Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, described the
submission of Prof Soyinka as unfortunate. According to Dr
Okupe, "it is quite saddening to note that Prof Wole had
become so close to the opposition party so much that he
has stopped giving appreciable and unbiased contribution to
national topics. Our eminent professor also sadly plays the
ostrich as he failed to reprimand Governor Amaechi, who is
the ‘national champion of impunity and official
recklessness’. The administration of President Goodluck
Jonathan prides itself as the most liberal, keeping faith with
adherence to rule of law and tolerance,”.
He accused the Nobel laureate of ignoring what he termed
the immoral, indefensible and unlawful attitude of the
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal,
after his defection.

Nigerian man sentenced to death in Malaysia for drug trafficking

A 35 year old Nigerian man was sentenced to death today
November 25th by a Malaysian High Court for trafficking in
251.66 gm of methapethamine.
Abuchi Ngwoke, was arrested in May 2012 at a Malaysian
airport. He had swallowed the drugs.
The High court judge described Ngwoke's testimony about
swallowing gemstones in Nigeria before traveling to
Malaysia as absurd. A date is yet to be set for his
execution.

UNIJOS in chaos as students protest hike in school fees

Students of the University of Jos continued their protests
today following yesterday's chaos in the school over what
they say is a 100% increase in school fees. The protesting
students set fire in front of the school gate this afternoon,
insisting that school authority must reduce their fees.
The students say the fee was N27,800 but has now been
increased to #60,000. They also say they were forced to
pay for developmental levy which has never been used for
any development within the university. They said all effort
by the student union government to speak with the Vice
Chancellor of the university Prof. Hayward Babale Mafuyai,
was met with a brick wall as the VC refused to negotiate
with the students.
Following his refusal to speak with students, they took to
the streets to protest, blocking all roads leading to the
university of Jos thereby bringing all activities to a
standstill. All university activities was also boycotted
including the exams that was meant to start yesterday 24th
November.

calls, nine cultists were arrested. On 24/11/2014 at
about 02:00AM a distress call indicated planned battle
of supremacy between De-Well and Degbam cults
groups at Okwuzi Community in Onelga.
The clash was averted by the swift action of the police
where seven suspects were arrested. They are Chinazo
Amaechi, Nna Chisom, Solomon Ossai, Regimus Igwelatu,
Monday Jackson, Chinonso Fordima and Tony Amanya
while others fled.
Items recovered from them included one pump action gun,
four live cartridges, one double barrel gun, Honda jeep with
registration No. IMO WER 685 FX, Toyota Camry saloon
with registration No. RIVERS BER 407 AP, two laptop
computers and assorted charms.
The suspects on interrogation confessed to belonging to
either of the groups. In a similar response same day at
about 1:30PM information received had it that some
suspected cultist were sighted with arms around back gate
of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port
Harcourt (RSUST) initiating new members. Team of
policemen Storm the area arrested and Joel Ozekume, a
final year student of RSUST and Princewill Brown, a
graduate of Cross River State University while others
escaped. One beretta pistol and 3 rounds of .9mm
ammunition were recovered from them.

Jonathan isn’t bothered about Boko Haram, all his focus is to remove Tambuwal – APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of sabotaging his own
Administration’s war against Boko Haram on the altar of personal vindictiveness and political
desperation, an action that is unbecoming of a self-respecting national leader.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the
party said just because he was so desperate to oust Aminu Tambuwal as the Speaker of House of
Representatives, President Jonathan ensured that the House could not meet as scheduled on Thursday
to consider his request for an extension of the State of Emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States.
”For a President who has severally stated his administration’s commitment to the battle against the
insurgency in the North-east, is it not a cruel irony that he allowed his personal ego and political
desperation to override his sense of propriety, by moving to have Mr. Tambuwal removed instead of
having the House of Representatives sit to consider his request?
”Does anyone need any more evidence that the president’s sole preoccupation is how to win the 2015
elections, rather than the fate of the hundreds of Nigerians who are daily being killed and maimed at the
epicentre of the insurgency? Had he been genuinely committed to the fight against the insurgents, would
the president not have allowed the House to sit to consider his request? How does he feel now that the
entire National Assembly has been shut down because of his capricious action?” it queried.
APC said because of his meddlesomeness in the affairs of another arm of government, and also his
blatant disregard for a court order that the status quo be maintained on the issue of the defection of the
Speaker to the APC, the President on Thursday suffered a moral and political defeat that will hunt him
for a long time to come.
“The plot was simple: The presidency decided to use the reconvening of the House as an opportunity to
remove the Speaker. While Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha was accorded a presidential ride into the
premises of the National Assembly, House Speaker Tambuwal was barred from entry by the hordes of
security agents who have been deployed solely for that purpose.
“Their plan was to ensure that, with Mr. Tambuwal locked out, Ihedioha would preside over the
reconvened House and the Speaker will then be removed. The consideration of the request to extend the
State of Emergency was not important to the Presidency. The fate of the Nigerians who are suffering
from the insurgency, which has displaced 1.5 million people, does not bother the Presidency. All it
wanted is to remove Tambuwal.

Delta EPZ project crisis: Tompolo denies any involvement, blames Uduaghan, Keyamo

Ex-militant Ekpemupolo, (alias Tompolo) has denied any
involvement in the $16 billion Export Processing Zone (EPZ)
project crisis rocking Delta State. In a bid to clear himself of
any wrong doing, Tompolo released a statement today
where he accused the current Delta state governor,
Emmanuel Uduaghan and his predecessor, Jame Ibori of
trying to use the project to collect the land belonging to his
people, the Ijaws of Gbaramatu kingdom.
He also accused human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo of
being used to blackmail his person. See the long statement

RE: DELTA EPZ AND MATTERS ARISING
MY TAKE IS ON JUSTICE, EQUITY AND FAIRNESS
So much has been said about the $16 Billion Export
Processing Zone (EPZ) which is meant to galvanize
Nigeria’s economic growth through adequate gas
processing and supply, using our dear Delta State as the
hub. For one, I am happy as a Deltan that this laudable
project is being planned and nurtured in my time, especially
on the heels of our fight for the need by government to
industrialize and enhance our economic well-being in the
oil-rich Niger Delta Region.
Nonetheless, I am not persuaded by the nebulous and
loudly-echoed ‘economic and industrial gains’ slogan being
orchestrated by some forces hiding under the EPZ Project
to re-launch a back-door move for the acquisition of lands
belonging to the people of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri
South-West Local Government Area of Delta State. In this
regard, I stand on the side of my people as I have always
done, to ensure that the voice of reason was raised and
heard by the powers that be. As a peace-loving Kingdom,
the people of Gbaramatu had used all civil and legal means
to ensure that justice was done by the federal government
by not going ahead with the planned ground-breaking
ceremony in the face of clear injustice, unfairness and
inequity.
As a result, many insinuations and perverted comments
have been made by both interested and rented parties to the
effect that ethnic colourations have been brought to the fore
by linking the justifiable postponement of the ground-
breaking to President Goodluck Jonathan’s ‘soft-spot’ for
the Ijaws of Gbaramatu Kingdom.
It should be noted however, that the struggle of the people
Gbaramatu Kingdom for both political and economic rights
pre-dates the Jonathan Presidency. History is replete with
courses of events as far as the struggle of the oppressed
people of Gbaramatu Kingdom is concerned. It is no longer
news to all that our Itsekiri neighbours, using all
advantages of being in government and power since the
time of former governor, Chief James Ibori(whose mother
is Itsekiri) as well as the incumbent governor, Dr Emmanuel
Uduaghan(also an Itsekiri) who both as commissioner and
later Secretary to State Government under Ibori, cannot
insulate himself from the calculated attempt by the
government-backed Itsekiri’s attempts to enslave
Gbaramatu Kingdom.
It should therefore be placed on record that if the belief of
the people of Gbaramatu Kingdom in their just and fair
struggle saw them through thick and thin since the time of
Ibori till date, the same spirit still lives on; and such does
not need the ‘soft spot’ of a Nigerian President of Ijaw
extraction to take the people to their rightful place. It was
(still) this belief in a just and fair struggle that in spite of
glaring attempts by both Ibori (then) and Uduaughan (now)
to exterminate the Gbaramatu Kingdom to the advantage of
their kinsmen, I made conscious efforts to respect the
institution they represent. In essence, I refrained from
abusing their persons as some Itsekiri leaders have
mindlessly done in the case of the postponement of the
ground-breaking ceremony by the President.
Perhaps, it is unfortunate to note that all those Itsekiri
leaders, especially Pa J.O. Ayomike who betrayed
uncontrollable and misplaced sentiments by abusing the
person of the president and calling for his resignation would
have achieved better things and indeed, much development
would have come to their impoverished Itsekiri villages if
such energy was deployed to ginger their son, who is now
governor, to bring development to their areas. The
Ayomikes of this world should rather be expressing worry
and bury their heads in shame that the over 12 years of
their sons in government and power in Delta State are more
of curses than blessings to their people. The case of those
vilifying President Jonathan is that of bottled-up anger and
transferred aggression ordinarily targeted at those who
looked the other way in the face of the sufferings of their
people to a man who tried to do justice by listening to all
sides of an issue.
What Does Festus Keyamo Want?
This question has become imperative in view of the rented
roles the Lagos-based Lawyer has played in the last couple
of weeks in the affairs of the state especially as they relate
to the people of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West
Local Government Area of Delta State. Before now, I had
seen Keyamo as a young promising lawyer whose passion
to fight oppression was unquenchable. I see him as a
brother and friend because there is still time for him to
stratify rented and commercialized struggle from
passionate human and civil rights crusade.
As a matter of fact, Keyamo’s continuous linkage with me
to purported attempts close crime is unacceptable to me. At
best, Keyamo knows too well that those whose flair for
injustice I fight against, those who have been severally
linked to murders in Delta State who today are his latter-day
friends, are not men of conscience. As a human rights
lawyer (as claimed by Keyamo), his efforts to unearth the
killers of Onokpite Ogbe were applauded by many, including
me. I was even tempted to disbelieve others when
accusations of ‘unpalatable practices’ trailed Keyamo’s
sudden u-turn to abandon the Onokpite’s case. But today, I
have no reason to disbelieve such against the backdrop of
Keyamo’s role in the orchestrated EPZ Crisis. In the face of
Keyamo’s sudden u-turn in character, it is absurd to ask
him if would have not have done what I did on behalf of my
people should he find himself in my shoes. I therefore find
very curious Keyamo’s attempt to demonize me especially
when it is obvious that since I willingly embraced the
Federal Government Amnesty offer, I have selflessly, at
high risks too, contributed to the enhancement of peace and
security in the entire Niger-Delta Region. I will therefore
urge Keyamo to be on the side of truth and justice rather
than being on the side of injustice because conscience is an
open wound, only the truth can heal it.
Conclusion:
My appeal to all men of conscience is to ensure that justice
and fairness are made the cornerstone of human existence.
Where these do not exist, it will be difficult for society to
make progress. The case of the plight of the people of
Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government
Area of Delta is clear and unambiguous. The precepts for
injustice and ingredients of inequality are daily being
planted by those who find themselves in positions of
authority and influence, especially in Delta State.
It should therefore be known that those who deliberately
drag the name of President Jonathan into this blackmail
game are doing this to perpetuate injustice. This is the crux
of the matter. But little do they know that the struggle has
been an age-long one, predating the president’s
ascendancy to office and through the will of God, my people
have been forging ahead. In the same vein, the struggle
might also post-date President Jonathan unless the issues
of injustice that have continually set the Gbaramatu and
Itsekiri ethnic nationalities against each are permanently
resolved. The Gabramatu people cannot be intimidated by
any resort to blackmail, using ethnic cards. Similarly, I will
not succumb to any cheap blackmail aimed at weakening
my resolve to fight for my people because this is a matter
of conscience and posterity. I shall not waiver even in the
face of threat and intimidation of all sorts until justice is
done.

To all the single ladies out there, see the top ten dating tips to guide you along when choosing a partner.

1. Own your own shit
You are who you are and that’s the end of
the story sister. If you feel compelled to
present yourself as something other than
who you truly are, to have interests that you
don’t really have, to know things you don’t
really know then you are in trouble, my dear.
That facade will only hold up for so long. Be
willing to grow and learn and try new things-
but label them clearly as such. Don’t be a
poser. Know what kind of eggs you like.

2. Don’t be such a drama queen
Seriously. Chill. Out. Don’t take anything
personally, nothing others do is because of
you. Slow your roll, dial it back about 1,000
notches and stop reading into every teeny
tiny little everything. Just as you respond to
things based on what’s going on in your life
and in your head, so do other people. It’s
actually not all about you. Shit. Little “good
news, bad news” delivery here. Yikes.

3. Don’t make assumptions
First impressions are important, whether they
are virtual or in person. However,
misrepresentations happen, and often,
especially via electronic communication.
Sadly, there is no sarcasm font, and
emoticons will only get you so far in
nonverbal response. Additionally, credentials
are just paper— a job, a degree, or a
“pedigree,” so to speak, is only one small
part of a person, it is not who they are. A
degree does not equate intelligence, nor does
the lack of one indicate the opposite. Gather
some facts before drawing conclusions.
However…

4. Be skeptical, but learn to listen (to your gut)
Unless you: a) have endless time on your
hands, b) like spending it running in
circuitous motion, or, more likely, c) enjoy
learning lessons the hard way, listen to your
intuition. Really. If something tells you it’s
not right, it’s probably not. Know the
difference between simply being uneasy
because you are getting out of your comfort
zone and what is legitimately no bueno para
ti. Don’t spend your time trying to make
something work that you know isn’t going to;
things that are meant to be aren’t usually
that complicated (well, unless you make them
that way, in which case, please re-read #2).

5. Always do (be) your best.
This shouldn’t be difficult, it should be easy
to be the best version of yourself around
people with whom you spend time. If it’s not,
then it’s time to move on to something
better. Relationships are about bringing out
the best in each other, not the worst, and not
the person someone else wants you to be.
Just you, the best you, whoever that is
today.

6. Look where you’re going
Leave your past in the past. Seriously. There
is a time and place for viewing the skeletons
in your closet and unpacking your baggage.
First, second, even third dates are not it.
Your past has shaped who you are, it has
shifted your paradigm and your perspective,
but it is neither your present nor your future.
Stop inviting the Ghost of Christmas Past to
dinner with you, nobody likes a third wheel.

7. Be quiet already and stop oversharing
Ask don’t tell, listen more than you talk, and
stop sharing your entire life story in the first
hour. Ditto with explaining yourself—knock it
off. People earn the privilege of hearing your
personal information and story by earning
your trust; save it for the right people. Be
authentic, humble and genuine. Your actions
speak louder than your words, and uh, your
selfies. Photo overshares to new
acquaintances, by the way, come off as a
marketing ploy. Translation: you’re trying too
hard and it’s not hot. Like, not at all.

8. Trust the universe
Everything we do prepares us for something
else, for better and for worse. A bad date
helps us to enjoy a good one, a good
relationship gets us ready for a great one, a
painful or arduous experience tests our
composure, flexibility and resilience. Be
grateful for the opportunities provided, in
whatever form they come. That being said, be
ready to see them; stay open and choose
your concessions carefully. There is a
difference between a compromise and
settling, a big one. If it comes let it come, if it
stays let it stay, if it goes, well, let it go.

9. Don’t go chasing waterfalls
The right person will come at the right time
and for the right reasons. Being overly
responsive or attentive is a bad plan; the
idea of “the chase” isn’t meant to be you
cyberstalking and checking in every hour.
Stop. Now. No. Just no. This means that if
your messaging pattern goes from phone
blowing up to you staring at it, nonstop,
checking to make sure it’s working, you are
pretty much done there, sweetheart. If he
responds intermittently to you, then yeah,
you’re not the only girl in his contact list. Let
that one go. Taken from the mouths of our
wise elders, “Don’t make someone a priority
who treats you like an option.”

10. Plan your escape route carefully
Seriously. I have “rescued” a friend from a
bad date, recently, and while wearing my
“Spiritual Gangster” tank top. It was half
awesome, half hilarious. I personally have
zero problem calling it when I see it (politely
of course), but it’s taken me some solid
practice to learn the art of the graceful exit.
Some things to remember: 1) take a cab if
you can, use a ride sharing app if you really
want to do it right, so you can “call” them
slyly from under the table and then suddenly
“voila!” it’s time to go, no awkward waiting
around, 2) meet for coffee or a drink, not
dinner, and 3) don’t stand someone up,
that’s just bad form (and bad karma). Be
honest with what’s going on. Don’t be an
ass but keep it real (translation, do not have
a friend call you with a fake emergency. I
promise you that is not going to end well).

Crisis Hits PDP As Governors Move Against Chairman Adamu Mu’azu

All is not well within the leadership of the
Peoples Democratic Party as some members
of its National Working Committee are
accusing one another of taking side with
some influential members of the party in
some states concerning the ward congresses
which were held few days ago.
The fresh crisis was threatening the party’s
chances of winning the forthcoming
governorship elections in some states. At
least, six PDP governors were also said to be
angry with the party’s Chairman, Alhaji
Adamu Mu’azu, for allegedly tampering with
the result of the ward congresses in their
states.
One of the NWC members said, “The
party is in a mess. We don’t know
how to handle it even though we are
trying to hide it, because we don’t
want this crisis to affect the chances
of President Goodluck Jonathan in the
election.
“These governors are angry that some
people within us are helping their
enemies to manipulate the result of
the congresses here at the party’s
national headquarters, and they are
spoiling for war.
Among the angry PDP governors are
Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State, Gabriel Suswam
of Benue State, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa
Ibom, Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State and
that of Cross River State, Senator Liyel
Imoke.
Two members of the NWC, who spoke with
Punch on the matter in Abuja on Monday
evening, said that the leadership of the party
was already polarised and it was already
affecting the workings of the party.
They accused some members of the NWC of
working against some governors and that
these governors were already mobilising
against the party’s national leadership.
The governors and another one were said to
be ready for war with the NWC and Mu’azu
over the issue.
The NWC member added, “The governors are
even joining the enemies of Mu’azu now to
see if he could be eased out of office. That
shows the level of disenchantment within the
leadership.”
