All is not well within the leadership of the
Peoples Democratic Party as some members
of its National Working Committee are
accusing one another of taking side with
some influential members of the party in
some states concerning the ward congresses
which were held few days ago.
The fresh crisis was threatening the party’s
chances of winning the forthcoming
governorship elections in some states. At
least, six PDP governors were also said to be
angry with the party’s Chairman, Alhaji
Adamu Mu’azu, for allegedly tampering with
the result of the ward congresses in their
states.
One of the NWC members said, “The
party is in a mess. We don’t know
how to handle it even though we are
trying to hide it, because we don’t
want this crisis to affect the chances
of President Goodluck Jonathan in the
election.
“These governors are angry that some
people within us are helping their
enemies to manipulate the result of
the congresses here at the party’s
national headquarters, and they are
spoiling for war.
Among the angry PDP governors are
Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State, Gabriel Suswam
of Benue State, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa
Ibom, Ibrahim Shema of Katsina State and
that of Cross River State, Senator Liyel
Imoke.
Two members of the NWC, who spoke with
Punch on the matter in Abuja on Monday
evening, said that the leadership of the party
was already polarised and it was already
affecting the workings of the party.
They accused some members of the NWC of
working against some governors and that
these governors were already mobilising
against the party’s national leadership.
The governors and another one were said to
be ready for war with the NWC and Mu’azu
over the issue.
The NWC member added, “The governors are
even joining the enemies of Mu’azu now to
see if he could be eased out of office. That
shows the level of disenchantment within the
leadership.”

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice
Mariam Aloma Mukhtar has blamed the poor
conditions of service of judges and the
deplorable state of courts in the country on
state governors.
According to her, governors are fond of not
obeying the constitution. She also said that
she was aware that judges of the lower
courts in many states were working under
horrible conditions.
She made the comment at the opening of the
2014 Conference of All Nigeria Judges of the
Lower Courts organized by the National
Judicial Institute (NJI).
While these problems are existent, Mukhtar
appealed to judges and magistrates in the
country not to use it as an excuse to
perpetrate fraud or indulge in other dishonest
dealings.
“Some customary and area courts sit in
rented apartments. I am also aware that in
some states, courts have been closed down
due to political squabbles among politicians.
I have heard of stories of magistrates being
abducted and in many cases murdered by
unknown persons due to lack of security. All
these factors are so debilitating on the
performance of judicial functions,” the CJN
noted.
Justice Mukhtar is expected to leave office
on November 20 when she will clock the
retirement age of 70 years. Justice
Mohammed Mahmud, the most senior justice
of the Supreme Court has been lined up as
her successor. He will appear before the
Senate on Tuesday for screening.

Biography:
Mother Teresa was a humanitarian.
This means she did things to help
out other people. Her entire life was
fully devoted to helping the poor, the
sick, the needy, and the helpless.
Where did Mother Teresa grow up?
Mother Teresa was born in Uskub,
Ottoman Empire on August 26, 1910.
This city is now called Skopje and is
the capital of the Republic of
Macedonia. Her birth name was
Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Her father
died when she was eight and she
was raised by her mother. She was
raised as a Roman Catholic and
decided to devote her life to God at a
young age. She joined the Sisters of
Loreto at the age of 18 to become a
missionary to India. She first had to
learn English. So she went to Ireland
to learn English at the Loreto Abby.
A year later she started her
missionary work in Darjeeling, India.
She learned the local language,
Bengali, and taught at the local
school. She soon took her first vows
as a nun and took the name Teresa.
She would teach for many years in
India becoming the headmistress at a
school in eastern Calcutta.
What did Mother Teresa do?
When she was 36 years old she felt
the call from God to help the poor of
India. She received some basic
medical training and then set out to
help the sick and needy. This wasn't
an easy task in 1948 India. She had
very little support and, while trying to
feed and help the poorest of the poor,
she herself was constantly hungry
and even had to beg for food.
Soon other women joined her and
she formed the Missionaries of
Charity. Mother Teresa described the
purpose of the Missionaries of
Charity as an organization to take
care of "the hungry, the naked, the
homeless, the crippled, the blind, the
lepers, all those people who feel
unwanted, unloved, uncared for
throughout society, people that have
become a burden to the society and
are shunned by everyone". Wow! She
had some lofty goals and considering
where she was at the start (see
above paragraph where she was
starving), she accomplished some
amazing things. The Missionaries of
Charity originally had 13 members.
Today they have over 4,000 nuns who
care for people just like Mother
Teresa described all over the world.
It wasn't an easy task to build such
an organization and to keep the focus
on the poorest people. She worked
almost up until her death on
September 5, 1997.
Fun facts about Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa has been beatified by
the Catholic Church. This is a step on
the way to becoming a Saint. She is
now called Blessed Teresa of
Calcutta.
Albania's international airport is
named after her, the Aeroporti Nene
Tereza.
She was awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize in 1979.
She once traveled through a war zone
to rescue 37 children from the front
lines.
She received numerous awards for all
her charity work including the
Presidential Medal of Freedom from
President Ronald Reagan.

Although the present emergency rule in
Nigeria’s north eastern states of Adamawa,
Borno and Yobe have not stopped Boko
Haram attacks in the region, the Federal
Government is set to send a request for an
extension, to the National Assembly.
“After a review of the state of Emergency in
the affected states, government decided that
it would ask the National Assembly for
extension of state of emergency in the
affected states,” said Mohammed Adoke,
Attorney General of the Federation and
Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke.
He made this known to state House
Correspondents after a meeting of the
National Defence Council.
According to Vanguard, the NDC meeting had
Chief of Defense Staff, Chiefs of Army, Air
force and Navy, as well as, the Inspector
General of Police, the Attorney General of the
Federation and Minister of Justice and the
National Security Adviser, all in attendance.
The emergency rule in the three states have
been extended thrice. The last extension
elapsed yesterday.

Biography:
Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil
rights activist in the 1950s and
1960s. He led non-violent protests to
fight for the rights of all people
including African Americans. He
hoped that America and the world
could become a colorblind society
where race would not impact a
person's civil rights. He is considered
one of the great orators of modern
times and his speeches still inspire
many to this day.
Where did Martin grow up?
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in
Atlanta, GA on January 15, 1929. He
went to Booker T. Washington High
School. He was so smart that he
skipped two grades in high school
and started his college education at
Morehouse College at the young age
of fifteen. After getting his degree in
sociology from Morehouse, Martin got
a divinity degree from Crozer
Seminary and then got his doctor's
degree in theology from Boston
University.
Martin's dad was a preacher which
inspired Martin to pursue the ministry
as well. He had a younger brother
and an older sister. In 1953 he
married Coretta Scott. Later they
would have four children Yolanda,
Martin, Dexter, and Bernice.
How did he get involved in civil
rights?
In his first major civil rights action,
Martin Luther King Jr. led the
Montgomery Bus Boycott. This
started when Rosa Parks refused to
move to give up her seat on a bus to
a white man. As a result, Martin led a
boycott of the public transportation
system. The boycott lasted for over a
year. It was very tense at times.
Martin was arrested and his house
was bombed, but in the end he
prevailed and segregation on the
Montgomery busses ended.
When did King give his famous "I
have a Dream" speech?
In 1963 Martin Luther King, Jr. helped
to organize the famous March on
Washington. Over 250,000 people
attended this march in an effort to
show the importance of civil rights
legislation. Some of the issues the
march hoped to accomplish included
an end to segregation in public
schools, protection from police
abuse, and to get laws preventing
discrimination in employment.
It was at this march where Martin
gave his "I have a Dream" speech.
This speech has become one of the
most famous speeches in history.
The march and Martin's speech were
a success. The Civil Rights Act was
passed a year later in 1964.
How did he die?
Martin Luther King Jr. was
assassinated on April 4. 1968 in
Memphis, TN. He was shot by James
Earl Ray while standing on the
balcony of his hotel.

National secretary of the Labour Party (LP),
Mr Kayode Ajulo has accused the All
Progressives Congress (APC) of using
terrorist tactics in its attempt to lure his
party into a merger.
“I dare say that the APC is not a political
party, but a group of persons using terrorists
tactics in their plan to throw Nigeria into
chaos and they should be so treated,” Ajulo
said.
The LP National Secretary added: “As big as
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is, it
does not muzzle us. The ruling party is not
forcing us into a merger. APC is harassing
us. It wants to force us into a union. It is
moving forcefully to takeover our party. That
is wrong,” he said.
Ajulo, who spoke in Abuja on Sunday, said
that the APC had been attempting to force
his party into a union for some time now. He
however warned the APC to steer clear of the
party, as the was not for sale.
“We believe the subterfuge as embarked by
the APC must be checked. Its extant
undertakings are not what a political party
should be doing. It is trying to muzzle us
and this is unbecoming. It is using the
tactics of terror groups to harass us and this
must stop,” Ajulo told the Nigerian Tribune.
“Merger should not be under duress, just as
bribing party officials and some union leaders
is criminal and this is not what a political
party should be known for.
“Forceful takeover of another political party
is against the extant law which constitutes
political party in Nigeria and as such, the
APC needs to be proscribed. The party’s
finance need to be subject to scrutiny,” he
said.
Ajulo also stated that the LP should not be
misconstrued as an organ of the Nigerian
Labour Congress (NLC), adding that the
party belonged to Nigerians.

The APC, in a statement by its spokesman in
Niger state, Jonathan Vatsa, said it discovered
that the particulars of voters in seven wards of
Shiroro, Gbako and other local government areas
were missing and that the voters might not get
their PVC. He also called for the removal or
redeployment of the state's INEC commissioner.
"The truth is that the areas excluded from
the PVC collection have always been the
stronghold of APC in previous elections in
the state. The inference now falls in
perspective on why in the last Niger-East
by-elections some of our supporters could
not cast their votes because their names
were missing from the voter register."
What worries us in the APC is that INEC said
that there should be continuous voter
registration. The pertinent question is, what
becomes of those who have earlier registered but
their names could not be traced on the INEC
register, as many of our supporters may be
disenfranchised before 2015 general elections
thereby giving way for rigging and all other
manipulations of elections Niger State is
notorious for.
We are not sure of the neutrality of the Resident
Electoral Commissioner, Dr Emmanuel Onucheyo,
who has subjected himself to the whims and
caprices of the government in power. That has
justified our previous call that if a free and fair
election is to be conducted in Niger State the
Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state
must be removed or redeployed to where his
material craving will be tolerated,' the statement
said.

Gunmen have freed Channels TV energy
correspondent, Olu Philips, one of the station's
cameraman, Polynus Odedeyi and 13 other
journalists that they kidnapped in the Niger Delta
creek over the weekend. Story below from

"Channels Television’s energy
correspondent, Olu Philips and cameraman,
Polynus Odedeyi said they were returning
from an official assignment when they were
abducted. They had gone to cover an event
at the Ogedengbe Gas Plant in Warri, Delta
State.
President Goodluck Jonathan was earlier
expected to commission the $16 billion
export processing zone project, but the
event was called-off.
In a telephone interview, Philips (the second photograph below) spoke from the Naval base in Warri,
Delta State, recounting their experience in
the hands of the kidnappers.
He said that the crew had boarded a boat
on their way back to town after covering an
event when they were accosted by the
kidnappers off the creeks of Gbaramatu in
an area called Escravos, in Delta State’s
riverine area.
“Around 11:00am, we saw another speed
boat coming behind us. They were about
six boats. They caught up with us, asked
us to stop and surrounded us.
“They had guns with them and they asked
us where we were coming from and we told
them we went there to cover an event. They
said we were spies and they collected our
camera and put it in another boat, after
hitting the camera man.
“They made some calls and decided to take
us to Gbaramatu. They took us to a High
Chief popularly known as Tompolo.
“They beat up some other persons that
were not journalists. After beating them,
they handed them a rifle with three
magazine and asked us to stand behind
them that we were criminals and that they
saw the rifle and pistols with us. They took
photographs of us and were posting it on
the internet that we were all criminals,
Philips said.
According to him, the abductors made
several threats that they will kill and throw
them into the river.
He further said that they were held hostage
till about 6-7pm before some Naval officials
arrived and they were handed over to them.

A surgeon from Sierra Leone who was being
treated for Ebola in the US died this morning
November 17th in a hospital in Omaha,
Nebraska, aged 44.
Late Dr Martin Salia who had US residency and
was married to an American, arrived for
treatment in the state on Saturday November
15th in a critical condition after leaving Freetown
by air ambulance.
"We are extremely sorry to announce that
the third patient we've cared for with the
Ebola virus, Dr Martin Salia, has passed
away as a result of the advanced
symptoms of the disease." the Nebraska
Medical Center said in a statement.

74 bodies of South African nationals who died in
the September 12th Synagogue building collapse,
have been released to the South African
government and will be flown to South Africa this
night.
The bodies which were retrieved from the
General Hospital, Yaba and the Isolo General
Hospital, were placed in mobile mortuaries
pictured above. They will depart Nigeria via 2
chartered airplanes at exactly 11.50pm. Upon
their arrival in South Africa, the corpses will be
handed to families of the victims for proper
burial. May their souls rest in perfect peace. Amen
